The article appeared in the December 1991 issue of Playboy, when Crichton was married to his fourth wife, Anne-Marie Martin.
Notice this line in the article:
"I've had fights that lasted all week. I've spent days arguing with the woman, until she finally saw my point."
Perhaps that explains the five wives.

He must keep them all private though. I hadn't even realized he was married once! lol.

He talked about it on an interview with 20/20. He said he’s only halfway to Mickey Rooney’s total. (That was before the 5th marriage.)
It seems that four out of his five wives have been blondes. I don’t know who the brunette was, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was his first wife.

Ahh.. and I imagine they were all quite younger?
